The Optatec international trade fair for optical technologies, components and systems provides the optics industry with the world’s leading information, communication and business platform at the Frankfurt Exhibition Centre.

At booth C37, Avantes will demonstrate the new AvaSpec-Mini-CL series, which can be equipped with a 2,048-pixel CMOS detector or a 4,096-pixel array.
Enjoy the speed and enhanced native UV/NIR response of CMOS with resolution down to 0.1nm. The design allows less than 0.2 per cent stray light, and the fast response time boasts data transfer speeds as fast as 4.6m/s scan and integration times ranging from 30µs to 59s.
As a result of the new design and using the latest automated production alignment tools, unit-to-unit reproducibility can be assured, in combination with excellent temperature stability. The AvaSpec-Mini finds its way into many areas of research, such as light analysis, chemical research and Raman spectroscopy. As it is easy to transport, the instrument is also very well suited to handheld applications.
Coherent’s Chameleon Discovery laser with total power control, is a one-box turnkey laser for multiphoton excitation (MPE) microscopy with built-in, high-speed power modulation included. Based on the latest acousto-optic technology, this new functionality provides modulation on both the tuneable femtosecond output and high power fixed output.
Real-time power modulation is important in MPE for several reasons. It enables optimisation of laser power for the depth of each image plane, and for fast ‘flyback’ beam blanking when unidirectional raster scanning is required. Additionally, rapid online power control is often required to compensate for the sinusoidal velocity profiles of the latest resonant scanner technologies.
The laser provides fast rise-time analogue and digital control of laser power, which can be synchronised with the microscope scanning optics.
The Chameleon Discovery now includes an expanded tuning range, which when coupled with a frequency doubler, ensures gap-free wavelength coverage from 330nm to 1,320 nm. This is of special interest for ultrafast spectroscopy and other time-resolved studies. Power levels are also boosted on both tuneable and fixed outputs.
A new Laser Attenuator has been developed, which utilises an ultra-hard coated, laser optical multilayer attenuator (LOMA) filter from Delta Optical Thin Film. The firm will be at the show to discuss applications for its range of filters.
The laser attenuator enables computer-controlled attenuation of a monochromatic light source from 1-99 per cent within the wavelength region of around 550-1,000nm. It provides the user with safe, repeatable, and real-time control over the attenuation by combining the LOMA filter with a linear drive, controlled electronics, and dedicated software.
This filter is based on an optical thin film coating that works on reflection, unlike other filters that work on absorption. This feature allows the LOMA filters to withstand high laser power as it attenuates the laser with no absorption of the input power.
The laser beam is transmitted without distortion of the beam profile, and no extra optics are required. No pulse broadening is observed, even with short laser pulses down to 70fs.
The optical coating works independently of polarisation and it is designed for a wide range of laser wavelengths between 550nm and 1,000nm.
Superabrasives specialist, Engis, is bringing two newly-developed polishing slurries to its stand at Optatec: En-Sapp and En-Cer.
En-Sapp, a polishing slurry for C-plane sapphire, has an ultimate crystal size of 0.3-0.5μm and can produce high quality surfaces to 0.2nm Ra. The product’s high percentage of solids means that it can be diluted with water to reduce processing costs, while its high stock removal rate makes it many times faster than colloidal silica. Furthermore, its non-crystalising formulation results in reduced machine down-time and maintenance, so increasing efficiency and extending machine life.
En-Cer glass polishing slurry is a versatile product which can be used on both pitch and pad polishers and has a 0.8-1.0μm soft particle size, offering reduced polishing times while producing high-end surface quality (0.2nm Rq BK7 and fused silica). This product also has a high solids content and can be diluted to achieve optimum performance on different types of glass and, in addition, suffers from no freezing restrictions, so can be supplied over winter months, thereby reducing inventory and costs.
Both En-Cer and En-Sapp can be re-circulated, reducing processing costs and increasing efficiency.

Xenlux develops, manufactures and supplies standard and custom fibre-optic components such wavelength multiplexers, short- and long-wave band-pass filters, star couplers and attenuators. The integration of these components with the active components such as transmitters or receivers enables the construction of custom modules. These then serve as an interface for the measurement of the spectrum or various physical quantities such as temperature, pressure, strain or torsion.
The new Hyperion colourimeter from Admesy is the colour measuring device of the next generation. It offers the best filter characteristics and extremely high sensitivity especially for colour and display measurements in the laboratory and in the production environment.
The beam analysis systems by DataRay has been proven in recent years as a reliable measurement component in research and in production. A new feature in the software now allows the measurement of line lasers up to 200mm in length. In addition, radiation can be analysed easily with a diameter of 250mm.

The Laser Zentrum Hannover (LZH) will demonstrate what tomorrow’s monitoring of coating processes might look like, in hall 3 at booth A58.
This year, the LZH will focus on three processes: in-situ particle detection; spectral high-resolution online monitoring; and flexible measurement technology.
Especially for longer coating processes, it is important to check optics for defect growth and inclusions during the coating process. The LZH develops systems for in-situ particle detection, which can be used to control complex coatings. These make it possible to identify sources of contamination in the process and to minimise or even eliminate them.
Complex multi-layer systems with the highest spectral requirements call for a high-resolution layer thickness monitoring in order to be able to meet the specifications. The LZH is working on online monitoring systems that also meet future resolution requirements. Likewise, the LZH is researching a flexible measurement technology for quality control even for small optics and fibres.
At the trade fair, the LZH will continue to offer its expertise and advice in the area of coating and process development. These include optics for space applications, astronomy, laser applications and lighting technology.
Advances in graphical processing unit (GPU) technology have made massively parallel computing accessible on nearly every PC. Photon Engineering has merged its opto-mechanical raytracing software with the power and scalability of GPUs to bring optical designers its latest product, Fredmpc.
With Fredmpc, calculations finish orders of magnitude faster than with conventional CPU raytracing. Users will spend less time waiting and more time answering engineering questions and performing trade studies.

For micro optics production, Satisloh will showcase the C-50 centering machine with an optimised handling system. As a technology innovation, the SPM-10/SPS-10 will be showcased.
The new SPM-10 and SPS-10 are the next generation of grinding and polishing CNC machines for micro optics, which can produce smaller workpieces than ever before and with greater precision and better repeatability. These are ideal for companies that are looking to produce micro lenses down to the millimetre range and below as well as micro optics aspheres, up to 10mm.

Schott will be presenting the newest updates to its established product Zerodur, which has now been used for five decades as a high precision glass-ceramic material. Currently, the product is being used in the manufacture of the primary mirrors for the Extremely Large Telescope (ELT) of the European Southern Observatory, which will consist of 798 hexagons. Astronomers rely on Zerodur because all of the stability and the ability to handle extreme temperature fluctuations.
Schott will also demonstrate its new illumination solution for stereo microscopy. With specially selected LEDs, the VisiLED system offers a continuous brightness curve between 0 and 100 per cent and new possibilities for object contrast.
The company will also be presenting new fibre optic solutions for laser beam guidance. This enables new, more usable device designs in surgery and dermatology.
During Optatec, Schott's Advanced Optics team will be on site for interviews, demonstrations and more detailed background discussions.

Veeco’s Spector-HT ion beam sputtering system for optical coating offers excellent layer thickness control, enhanced process stability and the lowest optical losses. For optical interference coating applications ranging from bandpass filters to beam splitters to laser passives, the Spector-HT has been engineered to improve key production parameters, such as target material utilisation, optical endpoint control and process time.
